Frequently Asked Questions And Answers
What happens if something is damaged during my move?
While our professionally trained moving teams take every precaution to protect your belongings, we understand that accidents can happen. Big Lick Moving has an established claims process to make reporting and resolving damage as straightforward as possible. We also offer different valuation coverage options so you can choose the level of protection that makes the most sense for your move. If you have particularly valuable, antique, or specialty items, let your Moving Consultant know before your move so we can plan accordingly.
How does Big Lick Moving protect my home and furniture?
Protecting your home is just as important as protecting what’s inside it. Our crews arrive prepared with professional moving pads, shrink wrap, floor protection, dollies, straps, tools, and other equipment needed to safely complete your move.
Furniture is properly padded and secured before transportation, and our crews take special precautions around floors, doors, walls, stairways, and other high-traffic areas. Our movers are trained technicians—not simply extra labor—and protecting your property is part of the job.
What items can't Big Lick Moving transport?
For safety and regulatory reasons, there are certain items that should not be placed on a moving truck. These can include gasoline, propane, explosives, certain chemicals and flammable materials, as well as other hazardous items.
We also recommend personally transporting important documents, medications, cash, jewelry, firearms, keys, and other highly valuable or irreplaceable personal items.
If you’re unsure about a particular item, ask your Moving Consultant before moving day. We’ll be happy to let you know whether we can transport it or recommend the best way to handle it.
How far in advance should I book my move?
We recommend reserving your move at least 2–4 weeks in advance whenever possible. During our busiest moving season, larger moves and popular dates such as Fridays, Saturdays, and the end of the month can fill considerably earlier.
If you’re planning a large home, long-distance, interstate, or full-packing move, booking earlier gives our team more time to properly plan your crew, trucks, equipment, packing, and logistics.
Need to move sooner? Give us a call. We maintain a large team and fleet and can often accommodate moves on shorter notice depending on availability.
Will Big Lick Moving disassemble and reassemble my furniture?
Yes. Our moving teams can disassemble and reassemble most common household furniture when necessary for safe transportation. This can include bed frames, tables, sectionals, mirrors, and other furniture that needs to be broken down to safely move it through your home or onto the truck.
Our crews arrive with tools and are trained to keep hardware organized throughout the move. If you have unusually complex, custom, antique, or specialty furniture, let your Moving Consultant know ahead of time so we can determine the best way to handle it.
What happens if my move takes longer or less time than estimated?
An estimate is based on the information we know about your move beforehand, but every move is different. Additional belongings, difficult access, long walking distances, elevators, unexpected packing, or other circumstances can affect how long a move takes.
For hourly moves, your final charges are based on the actual services provided according to the terms of your estimate.
For moves quoted at a binding or flat rate, the pricing terms will be clearly explained before you reserve your move.
Our goal is transparency—your Moving Consultant will walk you through how your particular move is priced before moving day so you understand exactly what to expect.
What equipment and protection materials do your movers bring?
Our crews arrive prepared with the professional equipment needed to complete your move safely and efficiently. Depending on your move, this can include moving pads, shrink wrap, dollies, hand trucks, straps, tools, floor protection, and other specialized moving equipment.
Our 26-foot moving trucks are professionally equipped for residential and commercial moving, and for larger moves we can dispatch multiple trucks and larger crews.
We don’t expect our customers to supply the equipment needed to do our job. We arrive prepared.
Can I leave clothes and other items inside my dresser drawers?
We generally recommend removing belongings from dresser drawers before your move, especially when the dresser is heavy, fragile, antique, or made from materials that can be damaged by the additional weight.
Emptying drawers makes furniture lighter and safer for our movers to carry and reduces stress on the furniture while it’s being handled.
If you’re unsure whether something needs to be emptied, ask your Moving Consultant before moving day. We’ll help you determine the best way to prepare it.
What should I keep with me instead of putting on the moving truck?
We recommend personally keeping anything you’ll need immediate access to or that would be difficult to replace. This includes medications, identification, passports, important documents, keys, wallets, cash, jewelry, chargers, laptops, and other small high-value or sentimental items.
For a long-distance move, it’s also a good idea to pack a personal overnight bag with clothing, toiletries, medications, and essentials you’ll want immediately upon arriving at your new home.
We’ll handle the heavy lifting—you keep the essentials close by.
Will Big Lick Moving still move me if it rains or snows?
A little Virginia weather doesn’t automatically stop moving day. In most cases, our crews can continue working in rain or light winter weather while taking additional precautions to protect your belongings and home.
We pay particular attention to floors, entryways, furniture protection, loading procedures, and safe working conditions when the weather isn’t ideal.
Severe weather or unsafe road conditions are different. If conditions make it unsafe for our customers, crews, trucks, or belongings to proceed, our team will communicate with you and determine the safest plan forward.
What Is Your Pricing?
We charge a simple, flat hourly rate plus a booking fee. Check out your rate with our online estimate tool. Rates vary by location and reservation date.
The clock starts when our team dispatches from our office and stops after the entire move is complete and the team returns to the dispatch office in Salem.
